The owner of a self-storage container yard in West Yorkshire, housing 40-50 containers, needed an automated gate system to improve security and accessibility for customers. The existing heavy manual gate was inconvenient, especially for customers needing frequent access. Additionally, the site had no access to mains power near the gate, making a traditional wired system impractical.
Challenges
- No mains power near the entrance, requiring an off-grid solution.

Solution Provided
To overcome these challenges, we installed a solar-powered automated gate system featuring a NICE motor with a 24-volt, 5-metre ram arm for enhanced support and reliability.
1. Automated Gate System
- Installed a NICE 24V gate automation system with high-torque motors for smooth operation.
- Reinforced the 2.5-metre-wide wooden gate with metal plates to handle frequent usage.
- Programmed soft start/stop functionality to prevent excessive wear and tear.
2. Solar Power System
- Installed high-efficiency solar panels connected to a Victron charge controller and deep-cycle batteries.
- Designed the system to operate reliably year-round, even in low sunlight conditions.
- Provided battery backup to ensure operation during prolonged poor weather.
3. Secure & User-Friendly Access
- Installed a GSM intercom system, allowing customers to open the gate via mobile phones.
- Configured keypad entry as a backup method for on-site access.
- Provided remote access control, enabling the owner to grant or revoke access from anywhere.
